Innovative solutions for the delivery of social homes in Wales

Welsh Government’s Innovative Housing Programme and MMC strategy

Friday 17th July 2020, 12.00pm

Webinar Overview

Building more social and affordable homes is a key priority for the Welsh Government. Over the last four years, Welsh Government has invested £2 billion in new housing across Wales as part of its ambition to deliver 20,000 affordable homes by 2021.

This public investment creates the potential to accelerate the opportunity to manufacture homes in more modern and innovative ways, using modern methods of construction (MMC) and new techniques to deliver more high quality affordable homes, faster and at scale and pace.

Over the last three years, Welsh Government has invested circa £90m via the Innovative Housing Programme (IHP), to stimulate the design and delivery of high-quality, affordable homes through new housing models, delivery pathways and construction techniques. The programme has committed funding to deliver 1,400 homes across Wales, built using innovative technologies and approaches.

Alongside this, Welsh Government launched its MMC strategy for social homes in February. ‘Reimagining social house building in Wales – a modern methods of construction strategy’ sets out Welsh Government’s expectations relating to the production of homes built using MMC. It encourages social housing delivery partners in Wales to take a fresh look at the delivery of new social housing and to consider complimenting traditional construction methods with new technologies and approaches.

Leanne Roberts and Darren Hatton of Welsh Government’s housing quality standards team will provide an overview of the MMC for social housing strategy, the IHP programme to date and the utilisation of innovative solutions to build more social homes in Wales.
